Chapter 11

As everyone stared at the spot where the wizard poofed, Trellion bent down and picked up the lone item of the wizard’s drop pile: the magical wooden staff. She twirled it around in her fingers, grinning. Mauler barked at it.

“Sorry, boy. We can’t play fetch with this.”

Trellion twirled the staff a few more times. She stopped and held it out toward the other Guardians.

“Any of you want this thing?”

“Why don’t you keep it?” Archeon said. “We’ll decide what to do with it later.”

Trellion shrugged and tucked the staff into her inventory.

Codex, his notebook in front of him, finished the sentence he was writing and then looked up at the others. “The fact that this wizard is the second strange, magical being who mentioned Valkyrie concerns me greatly.”

“Indeed,” Cassiopeia said, furrowing her brow. “It concerns me as well. These magicians have powers I would normally associate with glitches, yet I sense no glitchiness at all. What’s going on?”

No one had an answer, of course.

In the silence, the Guardians turned and looked from the mountaintop down into the village. They saw a group of villagers gathering at the base of the mountain. Among them, the elderly mayor of the town. Mayor Gato raised her arm and waved it back and forth, a questioning look on her face. Archeon waved back, his fist clenched in a gesture of triumph. The mayor smiled and said something to the villagers standing near her. The villagers raised a cheer the Guardians could hear on top of the mountain. The group of villagers waved joyously to the Guardians before dispersing to repair the damage to the village.

Back on the mountaintop, Codex turned to his wife, Aisha. They shared a look before he addressed the others. “You know, Capitol City isn’t too far from here. I think I should go there and do some research about this Valkyrie creature. The Capitol City research archives have the best collections of ancient manuscripts anywhere in the Overworld. If there are any accounts of who or what Valkyrie is or was, I should be able to find them there.”

“I’m coming too,” Aisha said. “My clerical order maintains a large monastery in Capitol City. It’s possible they may have some information as well.”

“I think it’s a good idea,” Cassiopeia said. “I have a terrible feeling we haven’t seen the last of Valkyrie’s minions or acolytes or … whatever they are. And, if this witch and wizard are telling the truth, we may meet Valkyrie one of these days as well.”

The Guardians descended from mountaintop and informed the mayor about what happened during the battle.

“That’s terrible,” the mayor said. “I’m glad you all survived.”

Soon thereafter, Codex and Aisha mounted their horses and set off for Capitol City, accompanied by two soldiers for protection from nighttime mobs. The rest of Guardians and soldiers stayed for the night, helping the villagers the next day to repair the flood and wind damage and to make sure that another wizard didn’t show up.
